Data Destruction

Data protection is essential and is a major concern for customers when dealing with data bearing redundant IT equipment. The 1998 Data Protection Act makes it a legal requirement to ensure appropriate measures are taken to prevent unauthorised access, alteration, accidental loss or destruction of personal data. Failure to adhere to the act can lead to prosecution with unlimited fines.

To ensure that all data stored is permanently erased without physically destroying the hard drive we overwrite the data multiple times across the entire surface of the hard drive. We use the recognised overwriting standard British HMG IS5 Baseline to ensure complete data destruction. The drive is overwritten a minimum of 1 times and on request 3 times for servers of which contain highly sensitive data for a piece of mind. All hard drives that are erased are issued a certificate of erasure which is provided with the asset report on completion.

In the event that overwriting is not an option or fails to pass verification, the hard drive is then physically removed and destroyed to ensure no data can be retrieved at a later date. All company security marks and asset references are also removed prior to resale.

WEEE Directive

Companies who dispose of more than 500kg of redundant IT equipment now have a legal obligation to ensure the equipment is disposed of correctly in line with the current WEEE Directive. This process can be expensive, time consuming and if performed incorrectly can lead to large penalties. The equipment may also contain sensitive data which must be removed before disposal.

We are dedicated in taking the hassle away from computer recycling and disposal and offer a FREE collection, processing and data erasure service. We also provide all the correct environmental paperwork which is required to ensure your company has disposed of the equipment correctly.

The WEEE Directive and the Data Protection Act are two important pieces of legislation for companies trading in the UK. Failure to comply with either can result in heavy penalties and bad publicity potentially smearing the company brand in the process.

We operate above and beyond the scope of the WEEE Directive, with a zero-to-landfill policy. We strive to reduce the amount of WEEE reaching landfill by offering a FREE IT recycling service to the majority of our customers. All equipment is processed with reuse and resale in mind, equipment that is considered Beyond Economical Repair is recycled using BATRRT (Best Available Treatment Recovery and Recycling Techniques).

Data Protection Act

The Data Protection Act’s scope is vast and covers a broad range of data security-related topics. The Data Protection Act of 1998 includes specific provisions for all electronic computer data, giving a legal responsibility to companies that store personal data. Companies that store this data are responsible for the correct and secure destruction of this data to prevent it from becoming available to unauthorised persons and the public domain. eco IT provides a secure data cleansing service, removing all data from storage media permanently.

How long does the recycling process take?

The complete IT disposal process takes an average of 7-31 days from collection to completion depending on the amount and nature of the equipment collected. We will book all the equipment onto our asset management system and assign each individual item a unique identity code (with the exception of small items such as keyboards and mice etc). All data-bearing media will be erased or destroyed and the equipment will then be assessed as to whether it is fit for resale or disposal. Once complete, a detailed asset report along with all completed environmental documentation and data erasure certificates will be emailed to you and the process is complete.
